The Diagonal is a small and entirely volunteer run not-for-profit online magazine, which aims to help smaller players in the global health and development sphere have their voices heard.

We are looking to expand in terms of writers and partnerships. To do that, we need your help!

 

Social media engagement & design volunteer

Role description

  • To schedule and respond to social posts on a weekly basis according to editorial guidelines and based around a specified routine.
  • To help The Diagonal editors plan social media content based around newsworthy events ahead of time.
  • To use analysis pieces posted on The Diagonal as a basis to create engaging and interesting visuals inviting conversation around key issues in global health and development, including GIFs, infographics, short videos and collages.
  • To help us monitor trends online across global health and development spheres, promote articles and recruit new partners/writers online.

We estimate these activities would take a minimum of 4 hours per week. We will also supplement this time with a monthly team meeting.

Applicant specification

  • You have demonstrable interest in and/or experience of global health and development issues, and study/have studied a related subject.
  • You can write clearly and engagingly.
  • You have an eye for attractive design and some experience creating digital products.  
  • You follow social media trends and have some experience with a variety of platforms; you are also willing to learn about new ones as they emerge.
  • You are communicative, reliable and self-motivated.

Editorial student representative

Role description

  • To recruit new writers and raise awareness of The Diagonal at your university.
  • To feed into our developing editorial and partnership strategy by scouting out new organisations, contacts and topics to cover.
  • To take responsibility for monitoring and covering relevant research, events and policy discussions taking place at your university and its global health related departments.

We estimate these activities would take around 4 hours per week, but sometimes more depending on events. We will also supplement this time with a monthly team meeting.

Applicant specification

  • You have demonstrable interest in and/or experience of global health and development issues, and study a related subject.
  • You can write clearly and engagingly.
  • You are involved in your university and degree subject communities, and are comfortable with approaching new contacts to discuss writing for The Diagonal.  
  • You are communicative, reliable and self-motivated.
